Zaiyren ran his hand over his face, already exhausted with the conversation he knew was coming. It was as if Fos had been waiting for him to return, and Fos didn’t waste any time in trying to seek him out.

Zaiyren scowled and opened his bedroom door after the third knock.

He isn’t going to go away that easily.

Folfos stood on the other side of the door, his eyes now deep silver and pleading, his hair hanging limply around his shoulders. He looked pitiful. Zaiyren sighed. He hadn’t talked to Folfos since their argument and didn’t want to. Truthfully, he was tired and didn’t want to deal with anything—his Avam’s secrecy, their guards acting like he was an invalid, Fos’ moods swings. None of it. But Fos had been relentless today, after completely leaving him alone on the day of his outburst. Hurt, the only thing Zaiyren had wanted was to get away, and the first person who had come to mind had been Maia.

Seeing her, even for that short amount of time, had brought him a comfort and happiness that had been slowly creeping out of his life. The little taste of her he’d gotten had stoked a deep desire that had him craving the taste of her, and the feel of being inside her. All his troubles had melted away from the instant he’d seen her face, but he was back home and needed to deal with his reality.

“What is it, Folfos?” he asked, even though he already knew why Folfos was there. Fos wanted to talk about their fight, but he wasn’t sure he was ready to.

“I’m sorry.” The words left Folfos’ lips in a hoarse whisper and a pained expression crossed his face. “I can’t even say that enough. Will you please just talk to me about it?”

Zaiyren crossed his arms over his chest. “Like how I wanted you to talk to me about whatever’s obviously bothering you? Perhaps I should treat you the same way you did me for wanting to talk.”

Folfos hung his head. “You’re right. I deserve that.”

“And much more.” Zaiyren didn’t bother to keep the sharpness out of his tone.

“I didn’t mean to hurt you—”

“Funny way of showing it,” Zaiyren cut in. He felt his irritation rising and a deep heat started to build in his chest. Sure, he was upset, but he didn’t understand why he was having such a strong reaction.

Alarmed, he fought to tamp it down.

It fought back.

“I know. I…damn it, I know, Zai. I’m so sorry.” Folfos’ raised his eyes to meet his. They were an even lighter shade of gray now, which usually meant Xanren people were extremely distraught. Near the point of tears, if not there already.

Zaiyren knew better. Folfos didn’t cry. He’d never seen him cry, not even as children. Not even when he’d lost Falry.

He damn sure wouldn’t cry for me now.

“Please, just…it’s killing me for us not to speak,” Folfos pleaded. “Especially like this. We don’t fight like this.”

Zaiyren’s face hardened. “We?” he asked. It was more than anger rising in his chest.
